Reignite our Why

You may be familiar with optimist and leadership author, Simon Sinek’s view on finding your Why. He says that “Your why is who you are at your natural best.” As I write this, it reminds me of what underscores the Why behind Meiava.

The Why of Meiava

Meiava was created from my Why – to accelerate gender equity and strengthen the pipeline of female talent - by inspiring women to find their personal best in their career and life. It’s about the authenticity that comes from sharing lived experiences and the power of having a network of supporters willing to connect with you for conversations that inspire.

Over the years, as my path crossed a diverse range of people, there were common, unsolicited comments that I received - “That was inspiring! You have motivated me to…”, “Thanks for your advice, Mimi. It has been helpful to have someone else’s perspective.”, “You need to write a book someday, Mimi to share your experiences with others.” It was not until I put these messages together did I find my Why and purpose to pay it forward and encourage others to do the same. I call this a “ripple effect”. It takes just one drop of water to create a ripple effect yet imagine if we can make it rain with support for women!

Finding your personal best

What Simon Sinek describes as natural best I would put a slight nuance to use the concept of being at your personal best. I have learned that finding your personal best is both exhilarating to discover what you are capable of doing, and yet fraught with challenges from the systemic and unexpected headwinds you might encounter.

A seasoned resume, denoting the hard work and stellar accomplishments in a career may shield the many challenges and biases encountered along the way that both women and men face – especially women of color disproportionately more so. It is slowly becoming less taboo to call out and talk about the negative things that can happen in the workplace and outside of it. The thing is, we are not alone in these experiences - we may just have our individual twist to the story. Only when we can address the negative things can we offer an environment where women can be at their personal best.
